My collection of wildflowers is mainly from the South Derbyshire area around my local town of Swadlincote. The area is part of the new National Forest with a lot recently planted woodland most of which is open to the public. I use a Nikon digital camera for the photos which works well except for some problems with focus and seeing the display in strong sunlight

A great Hobby

There is no way better of spending a warm afternoon in spring than walking in the countryside looking for new flowers to photograph. It combines exercise with interest and fresh air.

The Livens Collection

The Livens Collection is a collection of  pressed wildflowers from Leicestershire gathered in 1857 by Mr Frederick Livens who was a commercial traveller in the sugar trade living in Leicester. It  is bound in a single volume which was purchased by his wife  Mary Livens for their 10th wedding anniversary in 1861.Mary Livens wrote a charming poem to her husband in the front of the book and all he flowers are given their english and scientific names. The locations at which the flowers were found are also given in some cases with well known places in Leicestershire such as Newtown Linford, Beacon Hill and Martinshaw Wood being mentioned The complete collection including a letter from Leicester Museum Biology Department who commented that it was among the earliest known such collections from Leicestershire and notes about the Livens family of that time and much more can be seen at the following link.
